Great Success of Amber CBN used in the bandsaw sharpening

Published On: May 9, 2026

Amber CBN (Cubic Boron Nitride), we also call it golden color CBN wheel. As we all know, standard CBN is often black or dark gray, the amber variety is specifically engineered for high-performance applications like sharpening bandsaw blades.

After using this in the bandsaw sharpening wheels, it has got good feedback from our clients, please check

Application in Bandsaw Sharpening

Bandsaw blades—especially those used in industrial sawmills—require a very specific profile (the "gullet") to be maintained for efficient sawdust removal.

  1. Electroplated Wheels: Most golden CBN wheels are produced via electroplating. A single layer of the amber CBN grain is bonded to a steel core using a nickel bath. This allows the wheel to hold its pre-formed shape perfectly, ensuring the tooth profile of the saw blade never changes.

  2. Dry Grinding: Because of its high heat resistance, amber CBN allows for "dry" sharpening (without liquid coolant) in many setups without burning the tips of the teeth or losing the temper of the steel.

  3. Finish Quality: The uniformity of the amber crystals results in a smoother finish on the tooth face, which translates to a cleaner cut and a longer-lasting edge on the wood.

Why the Golden Color Matters

The color isn't just for aesthetics; it indicates specific physical properties that make it ideal for woodworking and metal-cutting tools:

  • High Thermal Stability: Amber CBN can withstand temperatures up to 1,900°C before its structure begins to degrade. This is crucial for bandsaw sharpening, where high-speed friction generates intense heat.

  • Crystal Clarity & Sharpness: The amber crystals are typically more transparent and "blocky" than black CBN. This shape allows the grains to fracture in a way that creates new, sharp cutting edges (self-sharpening), rather than dulling down.

  • Chemical Inertness: Unlike diamond, which reacts with carbon-based materials (like steel) at high temperatures, CBN is chemically stable when grinding hardened tool steels and high-speed steels (HSS).

Due to this, now most of our CBN grinding wheels, have both the black color and golden color kind,  you can chhose according to your needs.
